Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K Review: Finally Full Frame

blackmagic design camera

If you're looking to up your content game, DJI is definitely the place to look. For those not in the know, the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Show is an annual showcase of the tech that elevates creators across the entire content spectrum. Having just returned from NAB 2024, I can attest to what a whirlwind of inspiration and cutting-edge technology this year’s show was.

NAD 2024: DJI delivers on drones

It shoots in a variety of resolutions and frame rates, including 5.7K 60fps for smooth slow motion and 4K 100fps for crazy cinematic slow-mo. Plus, it has a horizon lock to keep your videos level no matter what you're doing and an "invisible selfie stick" effect that makes it look like you're filming with a drone. The new model feels just as comfortable to use as Blackmagic's other cinema cameras. It might be a little bulky, but its chassis feels excellent whether you're holding it with one or two hands. The whole thing can be heavy, especially if you use it with Blackmagic's optional battery grip, but this is still my favorite design for everything from the studio to run-and-gun shoots. Previously under Aputure, Amaran has officially launched as an independent brand dedicated to supporting all levels of content creation.

NAB 2024: Strada’s AI revolutionizes content creation

I also found it easier to coax a better image out of the full-frame camera using DaVinci Resolve, which brings me to one of the other big advantages of using this workflow. The result is that the new Cinema Camera 6K performs even better in low-light conditions than the already impressive model that came before it. Here are two photos, one with the previous 6K Pro, and one with the new Cinema Camera 6K. Both cameras were set to an ISO of 400, at an ƒ/3 aperture, and 1/30 shutter speed. They were also captured from the same position, although I cropped the full-frame photo to a comparable area of the 6K Pro. Compared to the sensor on the previous 6K Pro, the full-frame sensor has nearly three times as much surface area, but the same 6K resolution.

The Full-Frame Sensor Experience

Our conversation centered around the exciting new features in Maxon One and the company's commitment to empowering creators of all levels. The X4 also doubles as a regular action camera with super smooth 4K recording and a super wide 170° field of view. It's built tough too, with removable lens guards for extra protection, a crazy long 135-minute battery life, and it's waterproof down to 33ft (or 164ft with a dive case). VFX artists are in for a treat too, with a multi-poly rotoscoping tool, expanded USD tools, and a treasure trove of other editing and effects goodies.

NAB 2024: A celebration of brilliance and innovation

If you need to know anything about Michael, it's that he knows his stuff. He's brilliant and charming, offering an answer to any question and ensuring it’s a good one. The spring release of Maxon One is packed with powerful upgrades for motion designers, broadcasters, VFX artists, and more. Cinema 4D boasts intuitive particle simulations, while Redshift offers the ability to render non-photorealistic (NPR) styles. Red Giant gets a boost too, with Red Giant Geo, a tool for texturing, lighting, and cloning 3D objects in After Effects.

That means that each pixel is capturing almost three times as much light for each pixel in the image. The energy was electric and I left feeling seriously inspired about what's coming down the content creation pipeline. Their focus on understanding client needs and workflows was a refreshing approach in the industry. They have a tool for everyone, from filmmakers to vloggers to adrenaline junkies.

If you’re considering upgrading to a full-frame cinema camera, you’ll have a hard time finding more lens options than on this one. Putting a full-frame sensor inside one of Blackmagic’s cameras is probably the best upgrade I could’ve asked for. I often shoot videos in my apartment, and it can be difficult to get images that look good because there simply isn’t enough space in the frame to get the scene that I want. For example, below are two photos taken with a 50-mm lens, first with the PCC6K Pro and the second with the new Cinema Camera 6K; I stood in the same spot in my tiny living room. For some people like me who often have to shoot in cramped spaces, this is nothing short of a godsend. OpenDrives, a leader in software-defined media workflow solutions, received some well-deserved recognition this year.

NAB 2024: Amaran offers lighting solutions made for creators

Pro video hardware is always expensive, and one compromise often seen in more affordable versions is more plasticky controls, with poorer feel. But BlackMagic says that this Micro Color still has weighted trackballs and precision knobs. It’s a similar story for other popular mounting systems like the Nikon F-mount (46.5 mm) or the Arri PL-mount (52 mm). The only major lens mount that’s too short to be adapted here is the Micro Four Thirds system, which happens to be the mount used on Blackmagic’s older Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. If you have lenses from an MFT camera, you might want to think carefully about upgrading. As a reviewer who connects with manufacturers and helps readers find the perfect laptop, hearing from creators–pros and hobbyists alike–is the ultimate validation.

Mark has spent 20 years headlining comedy shows around the country and made appearances on ABC, MTV, Comedy Central, Howard Stern, Food Network, and Sirius XM Radio. He has written about every topic imaginable, from dating, family, politics, social issues, and tech. He wrote his first tech articles for the now-defunct Dads On Tech 10 years ago, and his passion for combining humor and tech has grown under the tutelage of the Laptop Mag team. His penchant for tearing things down and rebuilding them did not make Mark popular at home, however, when he got his hands on the legendary Commodore 64, his passion for all things tech deepened. These days, when he is not filming, editing footage, tinkering with cameras and laptops, or on stage, he can be found at his desk snacking, writing about everything tech, new jokes, or scripts he dreams of filming.

The new more portable model features a mounting slot for an Apple iPad Pro, an internal battery and connects via Bluetooth or USB-C. The DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel is available in May from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide for US$495. What sets the L-mount apart is its flange focal distance—that is, the distance from the outermost edge of the mount to the surface of the sensor. This matters because, when it comes to using adapters to put a lens designed for one mounting system on another, the mount you’re adapting a lens to can’t be larger than the mount it was originally designed for.

I had a fascinating conversation with Aaron Tsai, VP of Marketing at Amaran, about Amaran’s recent launch as an independent brand. Its focus on user-friendliness and mobile-friendly solutions, seamlessly integrating with Aputure's established quality is exactly what today's creators need. Amaran is a brand built by creators, for creators, and a commitment to this philosophy is evident throughout its catalog. In addition to the wide array of lenses available for L-mounts specifically, there’s a huge market of lenses that are compatible via adapters, including most lenses you might already have.

Editors can now leverage the power of AI for multi-source editing and even edit based on source clip transcriptions. Audio also gets a major upgrade, with Fairlight's IntelliTrack for AI-powered audio panning and a suite of new FX for remixing music, separating dialogue, and even auto-leveling background tracks. Blackmagic Design dominated NAB 2024 with its overflowing booth and incredible new camera lineup. Attendees were blown away by both the affordable PYXIS 6K cinema box camera and the future-proof URSA Cine 12K–perfect for creating cinematic masterpieces. The primary knobs can be used to control Y Lift, Y Gamma, Y Gain, Contrast, Pivot, Mid-tone Detail, Color Boost, Shadow, Highlight, Saturation, Hue Rotation and Luminance Mix.

The most prominent benefit of this is that there’s no crop factor when using most lenses. Cropped sensors result in a smaller field of view, meaning you can fit less of a scene into a frame compared to a camera with a full-frame sensor. Put simply, you need to be further away, use shorter lenses, or both to get the same image. This can often come at the expense of things like a shallow depth of field or worse low-light performance. He not only possesses a deep understanding of how AI can enhance production capabilities and a strong ethical compass regarding its application.

It shoots incredible 8K 360° videos, which allows you to pick any angle you want after filming. It's like having a time machine for your shots–letting you point the camera wherever you want, whenever you want, after the fact. Even after you reframe everything, the footage stays crisp and clear thanks to the super high resolution. For example, Canon’s popular EF mount—and the mount used on previous Blackmagic cameras—had a flange focal distance of 44 mm.

If you're looking for a powerful and versatile 360° camera, the Insta360 X4 is a good option to look at. During my time on the show floor, I was surrounded by brilliant minds pushing the boundaries of content creation–from Hollywood studios to passionate home creators dreaming of becoming the next industry giants. While many Mac owners use Final Cut Pro as their primary editor, DaVinci Resolve is commonly used for color grading due to its more powerful tools.

Its newly unveiled Atlas software-defined storage platform and business model won the NAB 2024 Show Award for Product of the Year in the Connect Category - Cloud Computing and Storage. Atlas offers a revolutionary composable storage model, priced based on capabilities rather than capacity, giving creators advanced options. As an individual content creator, imagine being given back half of your time to focus on new projects or spend more time with clients or loved ones. I can't wait to test Strada out on my weekly productions as it will help free up my time for things like saying no to my kids for my own entertainment (just kidding... mostly). Plus, it has voice and gesture controls for hands-free shooting and super easy AI-powered editing to help you create stunning videos.

When he heard the news about Bryant’s death, his first reaction was “‘No way.’ I was crying,” Young said. In 2014, he announced Kobe Inc., based in Newport Beach, with plans to develop brands that would upend the sports industry. That initial $6-million investment grew to a value of $200 million after Coca-Cola acquired a minority stake in 2018. The last Saturday of Kobe Bryant’s life came and went like any typical weekend at home for the retired Lakers superstar.

She earned a master’s degree in mass communication from Arizona State University and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Arizona. As the world tries to come to terms with the crash that claimed the life of basketball superstar Kobe Bryant, fans and cities across the United States have been paying tribute to the NBA legend. The city's airport was adorned in the same colors, with a post on its Twitter account saying, "Kobe was in many ways a symbol of Los Angeles and we join his family, fans and city in mourning all who were lost today." Later in the flight, the pilot apparently asked for “flight following,” a service where controllers are in regular contract with an aircraft. The controller was recorded telling the pilot “2 echo x-ray, you’re still too low level for flight following at this time.” That could mean the helicopter was too low to be seen on Air Traffic Control radar.

The relationship proved so distracting to campus life that school officials asked her to spend her senior year home on independent study. Though Bryant was a common sight, Young and Nunes said the shock of seeing the superstar in the flesh never completely wore off, no matter how many times he went to Pavilions or made a run to the Starbucks in the same shopping complex. Young, 40, said he also would see Bryant periodically during the three years he worked as a courtesy clerk at Pavilions.

Mass, he went to pray at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Newport Beach, where he and his family were regulars, according to a church official. Sarah Chester and her daughter Payton were also passengers aboard the helicopter, according to a Facebook post by Todd Schmidt who worked at Harbor View Elementary School, where Payton once attended. The helicopter that crashed yesterday in Calabasas, California, was operating under “Special Visual Flight Rules,” according to an air traffic control audio conversation with the pilot, captured by website LiveATC.net. Italian Basketball Federation's president Giovanni Petrucci told CNN, "We are shocked and saddened by what happened to him and his daughter Gianna and we hold his family close to our hearts in this moment of sorrow." Kurt Cobain's House, Seattle Roadtrippers

house of kurt cobain

You write in the book about doing photography and screen printing in college. What do you think visual art allows you to express that music doesn’t? If I had the answer to that, I wouldn’t have to make visual art anymore. That’s what I will be doing in my hotel on tour to relax, is taking beautiful stuff I find on the internet, or pictures I take, and goofing around with them on Photoshop.

Relationships and family

“We broke the world record for guitars in 2015 when we sold John Lennon’s Gibson J-160E. During the presentation, Nolan also revealed he and Julien recently reunited the Framus with Ringo Starr, who added his own name to the list of Beatles to have played the storied instrument. Their stance became clear once the lid of the original battered Maton guitar case – which had to be salvaged from a skip during a “cold, dark, wet March evening”, having originally been thrown out – had been lifted.

Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s Former Seattle House Is for Sale

It was more than two decades later that money changed hands for Cobain's Seattle home, selling in 2020 for $7,050,000. However, though the property was listed online for several months before being sold, no images of the house's interior were shared, meaning that what Cobain and Love's former home looks like inside today remains a mystery. But now it’s been found and – despite an incredibly conservative official estimate of $800,000 – is being tipped as what could potentially become the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction. I went to this clothing store, and they were having an event there for Peace Sisters, an organization in Pasadena, California, run by Tina Kampor. Tuition was like $40, and a lot of parents couldn’t afford to send their sons and their daughters, so they were just sending their sons.

Nirvana

It⁣ was during this ‍time that he started ⁤to form the foundations of⁤ what would later become ‍the groundbreaking band, Nirvana. The early life⁢ and upbringing of the iconic musician Kurt Cobain played ⁣a ⁣significant role in shaping his musical talents and artistic inclinations. Born on February⁣ 20, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington, Cobain’s childhood was marked by a turbulent family life and a deep ⁣love for music.

There are steps behind one of the benches in Viretta Park, and we are not sure if those lead to a better view of Kurt's home. There were lots of messages written, pics drawn, notes left, and flowers left at the benches in Viretta Park. Our favorite part was the drive around Mt. Washington to get there. It's in a very upscale neighborhood, not a place I expected to find Kurt's house as he seemed very down to earth. From their early gigs at local clubs to their meteoric rise to international fame, Nirvana’s presence in Seattle was a⁤ defining moment ‌in⁢ the city’s musical⁤ history.

Early Life and ‍Upbringing of Kurt Cobain

A lot of them [are] more relevant now than they were back then, which was horrifying. But also, I found things in the songs that I didn’t know were there, that I could focus in, at my age, that I really related to now, that wasn’t maybe the main part of the song to me. There might’ve been half a verse that became very important to me that wasn’t as important to me in my twenties, if that makes sense.

Books

And I changed almost everybody’s names just so if I got anything wrong, nobody’s embarrassed. But yeah, I went back to them towards the end of the process, and I did change some stuff, and I took out a whole chapter that was completely wrong. But there’s no composite characters, these are all real people that did exactly the things I said. SPD says one of the shells from this box was used by Cobain to shoot himself.

But that intervention would be the last time that Love and many of Kurt Cobain’s closest friends ever saw him. At this point, the death of Kurt Cobain would come within just a few days. Getty ImagesOn April 8, 1994, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was found dead by suicide from a shotgun blast inside the greenhouse of his Seattle home at age 27. The tour’s 10-day break gave everyone a chance to go their separate ways and take a breather. Cobain flew to Rome where he was joined by his wife and daughter.

However, he was uncomfortable with his newfound fame and graduated from marijuana to heroin to self-medicate his lifelong stomach pains. He also started dating singer Courtney Love, who shared his vices. In a recent conversation with The Standard UK, the 59-year-old musician criticised a number of today’s biggest pop stars, including Taylor Swift, Madonna, Lana Del Rey and Beyoncé. It must be very exciting to see art that meant something to you continue to be meaningful to generations of people.I just really wish that Kurt could have enjoyed it. And that’s the hard part, just being like, “Wow, I wish that he would’ve seen us live past the stupid Nineties, you’re-a-sellout thing.” I was very much a part of that and feel horrible.

But during the book writing process, if I had one or two Kathleen clones to just decompress with, and be like, “Oh, do you think it’s O.K., we’re sharing this story? You play a show, and there’s some weird thing that happens, and you all get to talk about it afterwards. How much were you going back to your old friends and talking through these memories? Kurt Cobain (February 20, 1967 – April 5, 1994) was the founder and frontman of the highly popular 90s grunge band Nirvana, before purportedly ending his own life. He was known for his cryptic lyrics, distinctive voice and guitar sound, dark visuals, and angsty, cynical view of the world and his fame. An exterior picture of the Lake Washington house and the greenhouse above the garage where Kurt Cobain's body was found.

Little information has been released about the house in the years since, though the deed to it has passed between several new owners since Courtney Love decided to sell it in 1997, per King County records. The house was also renovated in 1999, with the owner investing $250,000 in the property to develop a new garage and retaining wall. An electrician found the body at Kurt Cobain’s house in a greenhouse above the detached garage. The coroner’s report deemed Kurt Cobain’s death a suicide by gunshot.

Fans making the trek to the property however, usually end up disappointed. The interest in the assorted paraphernalia around Cobain has been gathering pace in recent years, becoming a side industry in its own right. Last July, the acoustic guitar Cobain played during Nirvana’s legendary MTV Unplugged In New York show in late 1993 was sold at auction for a record-breaking $6.01 million.

It’s a movement for equality, and that means for all people, not just for white women. But I’ve always seen feminism as connected to class oppression, and race oppression. I still define it that way, I think it’s a movement that is bent on challenging all oppression. And also, there’s no one to decompress with, there’s no Kathleen clone that I could be like, “Oh my God, can you believe that happened to us? ” I’m glad there’s not a Kathleen clone, although I would like to make out with her and see if she’s a good kisser, but other than that, I have a feeling she would drive me absolutely up the wall.

John Lennon’s long-lost Framus Hootenanny acoustic guitar has been found – and it’s set to go under the hammer next month for what could potentially be a world record-smashing auction. If you’re not enjoying your life, then something’s got to change. We’re only here for a very short amount of time, and you are not put here to have a shitty sucky life. Well, just because I started a business with a goal of raising money for a nonprofit, doesn’t mean that I think that social-justice capitalism is sustainable. That’s not where I see the future of activism going, because if we keep filling in financially as citizens, GoFundMe and stuff like that, for things that our taxes should be going for, instead of, let’s say, genocide. I think we need to find a solution to this two-party system, I think we need to radically change everything.

Miami Cruise Port Parking: Where to Park Guide

indoor cruise parking

Galveston’s cruise port has a wide variety of parking options to choose from. Where you decide to park will largely depend on your budget and the length of your cruise. As one of the most beautiful cities in America, San Diego is a destination in of itself — even without taking a cruise from there. It makes sense that many people would want to extend their trip and stay a day or two in town before their cruise. If that’s what you plan to do, try one of the hotels with cruise parking to save some cash.

What sets us apart from other indoor parking lots?

Similarly, on colder winter days, being parked outside for too long will delay your car from becoming warm. Even if there isn’t a silver bullet for keeping your automobile in top form, parking it in a garage may help prevent wear and tear compared to leaving it outside. Extreme heat and cold affect your vehicle’s performance, and when you regularly put it under the sun (or snow), you can make it more prone to specific difficulties. Keep your parking receipt handy in case you have any questions or need to contact the lot. If you’re leaving your car in a public lot, you may want to consider purchasing some additional coverage such as a security system or additional insurance.

Cosmetic Damage is reduced by having Covered Parking

Generally, drivers must pay the attendant on arrival at the Port of Miami car park (except Garage J, which requires pre-payment). Credit cards and checks are accepted, but not debit cards. As with most services, cruise parking rates vary depending upon the convenience to the port and the parking services included.

Premium Galveston Cruise Parking

With all of the options, it can be a little overwhelming to figure out where you should park. Truth is, most lots are similar and located about the same distance from the port. The major differences between most lots is whether or not they offer covered/indoor parking and of course, the price you’ll pay. Galveston Indoor Cruise Parking is provided by Port Parking and is the newest indoor cruise parking facility in Galveston Texas. Port parking is conveniently located at 202 Harborside Drive, at the of 37th st. and Harborside Dr, and just blocks from the terminal. With over 100 thousand square feet of available indoor cruise parking, we still suggest you booking a reservation to park because spaces will fill up.

An automobile parked outside may reach temperatures of up to 170°F. Don’t be fooled by the enticing hue of your car’s paint. Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet rays can wreak havoc on your automobile’s paint job. Acids from birds, sticky insect residue, and dripping tree sap can also damage it.

If you have just a few days available and want to test the waters first, consider a short cruise to Key West and the Bahamas. These fun, approachable ports are perfect for first-time cruisers and boast great food, sunshine, and excursions for both unwinding and adventure. Cruise ships typically offer spa services for an additional charge.

Although booking with your cruise line will eliminate the middle man, you won't get a cheaper price, and it's not always the best idea in terms of value. Additionally, if you live near a cruise port and have a flexible schedule, be on the lookout for last-minute resident rates. The easiest thing you can do is familiarize yourself with standard cruise pricing across the industry so you'll know a good deal when you see one.

Keep Track of Your Expenses

Cruise ships operate on a cashless system where purchases are charged to your onboard account, which is linked to a credit or debit card. Many cruise ships have begun allowing guests to charge casino purchases to their onboard accounts. Cruise ships typically run as cashless societies and require guests to set up an onboard spending account using a credit card. After activating their shipboard account, guests receive a keycard that functions as their onboard credit card and room key. Having a keycard is more convenient than carrying cash or multiple credit cards with you as you relax on your cruise. When it comes to how much cash to bring on a cruise, there are several factors to consider.

On the other hand, you may find one-of-a-kind items that you want. Charge it on your cruise card and pay with your registered credit card at the end of your cruise. Smaller items such as baseball caps and jewelry gifts often go on sale closer to the end of the cruise. If you’re a seasoned traveler and want to visit favorite destinations in a new way, consider a cruise to the Mediterranean.

You’re probably wondering what shore excursions are, how to prepare for your cruise, and what to pack. On some cruise lines, like MSC, you are able to ‘load’ money onto your account using machines around the ship. If you are going to want to visit certain paid-for attractions it is important that you factor the cost of this into your cruise. I very rarely pay using cash, preferring to pay by card or prebook tickets online before visiting the port. It is definitely worth spending some time researching the ports that you are visiting to determine if you need to pay extra for transport.

They have a pre-purchased beverage package and an internet package already included in the price of the cruise. Often, organized ship excursions come with a guide and are more expensive than booking with a private excursion company. If you purchase a wifi package, do it before you leave home.

Tipping beyond the automatic service charge is a controversial topic that we won’t dive into in this article. The cheapest time to cruise is during hurricane season, the period of time between June and November when hurricanes are most likely to occur in the Atlantic. Working with a travel agent is another great way to increase value for money.

You can even track your expenses via the Celebrity Cruises app. Using an ATM in your destination is one of the easiest and best ways to get the local currency. However, you can also order currency through your bank before you leave for a Mediterranean cruise, so you don’t have to track down ATMs during your journey. Overall, bringing cash on a cruise provides flexibility, convenience, and the opportunity to make the most of your travel experience. Another major cruise destination where dollars are widely accepted is Mexico.

However, you will most likely not get a great exchange rate, so for small transactions, you may want to have some Mexican Pesos with you. Always ask before you are seated at a restaurant whether or not they take credit cards – most places in popular cruise port destinations in Mexico will take cards. In some ports, the local currency is at par with the U.S. dollar, as in the case in Bermuda and Cayman Islands. U.S. dollars are accepted in Aruba, but the local currency is the florin, worth $.056 U.S. dollars, and many vendors prefer to provide change in the local currency. In Europe, the euro is a common currency with the exception of places like the U.K., which uses the pound sterling.

And if you want to tip your room steward or waitstaff above the prepaid gratuity, then bringing a little extra cash is the best option. We highly recommend paying for anything OFF of the ship in cash. Port areas in tourist areas in the Caribbean and Bahamas are typically safe from violent crime, but petty crime like theft — or credit card fraud — could happen. So if you plan to pay for meals and entertainment with a card, there is the risk of being overcharged, charged twice, etc.

Give them their own cash to spend as they will, and when it's done, it's done. When getting ready for a cruise, many people are unsure how much cash to bring. The cruise has been paid for, and most costs have already been purchased through drink and dining packages, and pre-booked shore excursions for days in port. You’ll use your SeaPass card to pay for drinks, spa treatments, specialty restaurants, casino credit, and everything else you can think of.

These machines are typically located in public areas such as the atrium or casino and allow passengers to withdraw cash using their debit or credit cards. All of your cruise expenses are taken care of with your onboard account. You will already have paid your cruise fare and may have added pre-paid gratuities, and such things as a drinks package and excursions to the amount prior to sailing. Just don’t forget that cash tips are on top of the automatic gratuities that cruise lines charge. It’s a great way to thank the hard-working staff that makes cruise vacations so relaxing. Each cruise line has a set per-person, per-day amount that it will charge to each cruiser's onboard account, based on the type of cabin in which they're staying.

How Much Money or Cash Should I Bring on a Cruise?

how much cash to bring on a cruise

Make sure you are fully prepared for your next cruise by checking out this article next. So many people make so many wrong assumptions about cruising. You don’t have to buy the cruise lines Wi-Fi to use the Cruiseline’s App’s.

Excursions and Activities

Always remember to inform your Bank and Credit Card Company that you are traveling. Take sensible precautions when carrying cash and do not have it visible. To be clear, you will not need much cash at all while onboard. Just like pre-cruise, once the cruise is over, you may need cash following the cruise as you make your way home.

How Much Cash Do Cruisers Typically Spend?

how much cash to bring on a cruise

Ask your cruise line before you travel for photography price lists to know how much this will cost you. Paying for gratuities in advance means you do not need to think about tipping on board. Alternatively, you can also pay on board when you check out and pay your final bill. On top of this, most entertainment on board is included, and some beverages, such as water, juices, tea, and coffee, at the self-service machines in the buffer restaurants. But you will also want to take some cash with you for small incidentals when on shore – think coffee, ice-creams, tips for restaurants, and even taxis. There are nearly two dozen complimentary and specialty restaurants for you to choose from, as well as options if you want to eat healthy on your cruise.

Additional Costs to Consider

Some people throw caution to the wind and really splurge on lots of extras on a cruise. Still others keep expenses to a minimum and try to save money while cruising. There are many wonderful tours and excursions that will not be available on the ship. And if you book a local tour guide or attraction off the ship you will want some cash to pay for it. In many cases, especially if you are traveling by bus, you will have to pay the driver in cash, so it’s always good to keep some of those small bills handy.

Some credit cards now have perks with no foreign transaction fees. If you don’t have one of these cards it will be better to use cash when off the ship in port as well. Most of the ports to which cruise ships travel are very safe; otherwise they stop going. But any high tourism area can face issues with credit card theft and other petty crimes. Overall, while you can use cash for some onboard expenses on a Carnival cruise, it’s most convenient and efficient to link your Sail & Sign account to a credit card or debit card. This allows you to easily track your expenses and settle your account at the end of the cruise.

Port days

Carnival Cruise Cash can also be used to settle any outstanding balances on a passenger’s onboard account at the end of the cruise. Carnival Cruise Cash is a form of onboard credit that can be purchased in advance or during a Carnival cruise. If you love to buy gifts, local crafts, and souvenirs, you’ll need to bring more money. You may wonder how much cash you’ll need to bring on your cruise. If you haven't yet reached the end of the final payment window, you can call your travel agent or cruise line to ask for a price adjustment. You won't see a reduction in the amount you pay for your cabin, but you will be receiving more value for your money.

Comfortable pants and a tee are okay, especially on the first day when everyone is getting settled. Fortunately, with Celebrity Cruises Open Access, you can head straight to your stateroom upon boarding before exploring the ship. Bring a day bag or backpack with your essentials, an outfit change, or a swimsuit so you can take a dip in the pool. How much information you want to soak up before your first cruise is entirely up to you.

Can a travel agent save you money on a cruise?

Remember you may get help with luggage in the port, a taxi to/from the airport/hotel/cruise port, room service on board, etc. And all this extra tipping over and above prepaid gratuities is all at your own discretion and never a must. For this, they ate at three specialty restaurants during the 7-day cruise, shopped for small souvenirs, and tipped extra for room service and taxis. We recommend that you travel with credit cards and not debit or bank cards d for your safety, protection against fraud, and peace of mids. Inform your credit card company that you will be traveling, so they recognize transactions from abroad and never put holds on available credit. On the last night of your cruise, you’ll get an itemized list of everything you purchased and the credit card on file will be charged that amount.

You will also need a similar amount of cash at the end of your cruise if you want to use the services of a porter to get your luggage from the port to your car or taxi. If you take a Lyft or an Uber to the cruise port you can of course take care of the charge and the top on the phone app. If you are staying in a hotel at the port before your cruise you may need cash for bell services, concierge, and bar services.

If you have any questions about your bill or any items charged, you have time to speak with Guest Relations before your card is charged. Beyond that, even if you aren’t doing any other research on your destinations, you’ll need to know what documents to bring and what time to arrive in port to board the ship. Your ship will sail off without you if you don’t have the proper documentation or if you’re late on embarkation day.

Ultimately, it’s important to check with your specific cruise line for their policies on cash and other forms of payment. It really is a very personal choice as to the amount of money you will take in cash with you to foreign ports. It is up to you and once you have sailed on your first cruise you will find it easier to realize what the right balance is for you. You will most likely be using a credit card for your port purchases. In many regions, tips aren’t necessarily required but are seen as an extra thank you. In Italy, for example, tipping is not customary, but a nice to have for great service.

Yes, you most likely will want to have some cash with you and available the first day you cruise, and even before you arrive at the port to embark on your ship. These are some of the expenses that you may incur when you are onboard the ship. Whilst many costs are included on a cruise, there are some things that you will pay extra for. One of the great things about cruises is that you can mostly avoid using again cash at all. If you just stayed on the ship at all times, you wouldn’t even need cash for anything.

If not, exchange some cash beforehand so you’re not spending precious time in port trying to exchange currency. When you check-in for your cruise, you will be asked to provide a method of payment to use for onboard charges. If you provide a credit card, that card will be linked to your overall account – and, importantly, to your cruise card.

With most cruises operating as cashless societies, it is possible to take a cruise without bringing any cash at all. But, when you’re craving a Jamaican patty or eyeing a Sicilian cannoli, you’ll be happy you have a few bills stashed in your pocket. Bringing money on your cruise will also help you show appreciation to servers, drivers and other helpful folks you meet throughout your journey. How will you get to your cruise ship’s embarkation port from the airport?

If you have cash on you, you’ll be ready to enjoy a special moment at the gelateria or anywhere an opportunity arises during your trip together. Another benefit of carrying cash is the ability to set a budget for your expenses. By allocating a specific amount of cash for each day, you can easily keep track of your spending and avoid overspending.
